Shilajit Safety: Side Effects, Interactions and Who Should Avoid It

Shilajit has a long history of traditional use, and purified, tested resin is generally well tolerated when taken as directed. But it isn't right for everyone. Here's what to know before you start.

Never use raw shilajit

The biggest safety risk with shilajit isn't the purified product — it's raw or poorly processed material, which may contain heavy metals, microbes and other contaminants. Only buy purified resin with a third-party lab report.

Who should avoid shilajit

  • Anyone under 18.
  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety research.
  • People with iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis.
  • People with gout or high uric acid, unless cleared by their doctor.

Talk to a healthcare professional first if you…

  • Take any prescription medication, particularly for blood pressure, blood sugar or heart conditions.
  • Have a chronic medical condition.
  • Are scheduled for surgery.

Possible side effects

Most people experience no issues at the suggested serving. Occasionally, people report mild effects such as an upset stomach, headache or feeling warm. Starting with half a serving and taking it dissolved in a warm drink can help. Stop using it and seek medical advice if you notice dizziness, a rapid heartbeat, rash or any other concerning reaction.

Stick to the serving size

Our suggested serving is approximately 200 mg once daily. Taking more does not mean better results and may increase the chance of side effects.

Quality is a safety issue

Choosing a reputable product is the single most effective safety step. Look for purified resin, a named manufacturer, a GMP-compliant facility, and a batch-specific certificate of analysis from an independent, ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab. See why lab testing matters.
