Why Lab Testing Matters: Heavy Metals and Shilajit
What a shilajit certificate of analysis should include, how to read heavy metal and microbial results, and the red flags to watch for.

Shilajit forms inside rock. That's what makes it mineral-rich — and it's also why testing is non-negotiable. Here's what lab testing covers and how to tell a meaningful report from a marketing PDF.
Why shilajit needs testing
Raw shilajit can pick up heavy metals from the surrounding geology, as well as microbes during collection and handling. Purification significantly reduces these risks, but the only way to confirm that a particular batch is clean is to test it.
Heavy metals
The four heavy metals most commonly screened in supplements are:
- Lead (Pb)
- Arsenic (As)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Mercury (Hg)
Results are usually reported in parts per million (ppm) or micrograms per gram (µg/g) and compared against limits. Because shilajit is taken in very small daily amounts (around 200 mg), the daily exposure from a clean product is tiny — but limits still matter.
Microbiology
A good certificate includes total aerobic microbial count, yeast and mold, and specific pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella, which should be reported as absent or not detected.
What a trustworthy report looks like
- It is issued by an independent lab, not the brand itself.
- The lab is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited — the international standard for testing laboratories.
- It references a batch or lot number that matches the product being sold.
- It shows actual results with units and limits, not just the word “pass”.
- It is recent.
Red flags
- No report available, or “available on request” with no follow-through.
- A single old report used for every batch.
- Results without units, limits or a lab name.
- Claims of “zero heavy metals” — trace amounts are normal for a mineral resin; what matters is that they're within safe limits.
Our approach
Shilajit Remedy batches are third-party tested at an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory for heavy metals and microbial contamination, and manufactured in a GMP-compliant facility. Visit our certificate of analysis page to view or request the report for your batch.
