How to Tell if Shilajit Is Real: 6 Practical Checks

Shilajit is valuable, rare and hard to verify by eye — which makes it a target for adulteration. Here are six practical checks you can use, plus the one that matters most.

1. The temperature test

Genuine shilajit resin is thermoplastic: it becomes hard and brittle when cold and soft and pliable when warm. Put a small piece in the fridge for 15 minutes — it should snap or crack. Warm it in your fingers and it should gradually soften and become sticky.

2. The water solubility test

Drop a pea-sized amount into warm water. Real shilajit dissolves completely within a minute or two, turning the water golden-brown to dark amber, with little or no sediment. If large particles remain or the material floats, be suspicious.

3. The alcohol test

Pure shilajit is largely insoluble in alcohol. If your sample dissolves easily in rubbing alcohol, it may contain fillers or synthetic additives.

4. The flame test (with care)

When exposed to a flame, genuine shilajit tends to bubble rather than burn with a bright flame, and it shouldn't leave much ash. Treat this as a rough indicator only, and be careful.

5. Smell and taste

Expect an earthy, smoky, slightly bitter aroma and taste. A sweet, perfumed or chemical smell suggests added ingredients.

6. The paperwork

A trustworthy seller tells you where it is from, who made it, and provides a supplement facts panel with a clear serving size and warnings.

The check that actually matters: a lab report

Home tests can catch obvious fakes, but they cannot tell you whether shilajit is safe. Only laboratory testing can confirm heavy metal levels (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury) and microbial safety. Always ask for a batch-specific certificate of analysis from an independent, ideally ISO/IEC 17025 accredited, laboratory.

Real shilajit passes home tests. Safe shilajit passes lab tests. You want both.
